At long last—Heidi gets her Bandtailed pigeon! Letter by George Calef

For two years of inquiry everybody had told us everything about bandtailed pigeons. They said they were very challenging shooting as they screamed across high ridges and saddles. They said they were very hard to kill; you need an ounce and a quarter of # 6 shot. “They love acorns, and elder berries, and manzanita, Cascara, and Arbutus berries. But if they’ve been eating acorns they’re rally bitter. They had told us everything in fact except the one thing we wanted to know—where to find some.

If I Can, You Can by Henry Gilbey

 

These days I can sit here in my home office in Cornwall, a beautiful corner of southwest England, and produce work for many different clients all over the world. Technology has given me this ability, but it was not too long ago when I went to my first computer lecture at university and didn’t even know what a mouse was, let alone understand terms like RAW, aRGB, RAM, Gigabytes, and Photoshop!! Talk about times a’changing. If there is one single thing in my working life that I have embraced to the max, it’s the whole digital photography thing. I love it, and I love the control and flexibility it gives to somebody like me who works for themselves and on their own.

Tuna: A Helicopter Pilot Speaks Out

A helicopter pilot speaks out about his experiences onboard a number of purse seine tuna fishing vessels operating in the Pacific. His gruesome footage shows how the use of Fish Aggregation Devices is resulting in the bycatch of all sorts of marine life and contributes to the depletion of tuna stocks. Greenpeace is campaigning for more sustainable and less destructive tuna fisheries in the Pacific Ocean.
